Mindfulness Meditation: What is It and Why We Should Practice It?

How to Practice Mindfulness Meditation

One advantage of mindfulness meditation is that it can be practiced almost anywhere. You can go to a meditation center and practice in groups or you can do it alone within the comfort of your own home. What is important is to take into account three important aspects – body, thoughts and breathing.

Pick a quiet and comfortable spot. Sit down with an upright posture with legs crossed. Rest your hands on your thighs. Let your gaze fall one something four to six feet away in front of you. Bring your focus on whatever you are staring at. The greatest challenge would be a wandering mind.

Next, work on your breathing. Feel the way you breathe. There is no special pattern or technique here. Just pay attention on you natural breathing. The trick here is to remain natural as possible while being aware of your environment.

Finally, note where your thoughts go. The essence of mindfulness meditation is to become aware of your surroundings, your body and your thoughts. It is not freeing your mind from everything. It is teaching us to embrace what we currently have and enjoy the experience, not escape from them.
